Scale drawings of metal silhouette targets are available in PDF format. The various targets are listed below:. Note to Tournament Sponsors & Competitors: When reporting your match to the NRA Competitive Shooting division, please make sure that you indicate the number of competitors (not just a check mark), on the Jury Reporting card. This is required for all Approved Matches. If you wish, you may mail the Jury Reporting Card in an envelope. This might help solve the missing report problem that exists.
Also, should you have to cancel a match, please contact the NRA at the below address ASAP. National Rifle Association Attn: Silhouette Dept. 11250 Waples Mill Rd Fairfax, VA 22030 Phone: 703.267.1474 Fax: 703.267.3941 If you are sending in a Grand Slam Reporting form and the competitor fired 10 in a row with the same gun on more than one animal, you may check all the boxes required on the one form (i.e.
Competitor shot High Power Rifle and hit 10 in a row on rams and pigs - just send one form with both rams and pigs checked off). Silhouette National Record Reporting Forms may be downloaded.
After your last match of the year, please send in the remaining/unsold Classification Book Covers to NRA as soon as possible so that we receive the serial numbers for accountability/inventory purposes. You may also send your reporting card for any matches you missed in the same envelope. Scores in an 80-shot Aggregate Match should be entered in the Classification Score Record Book as they were fired. If the match was fired as two 40 shot matches, then both 40 shot scores should be entered.
The Classification Book shows 60 and 80 shot break points for firing a 15 or 20 shot string at one time. If the match was fired in this fashion, you would then enter the 60 or 80 shot total in the Classification Book.
The 2013 Classification Books have arrived, and the cost of the Silhouette Classification Score Record Books remains at $13.00 per book. From the NRA Silhouette Committee: The Silhouette Committee is accepting bids for Silhouette National Championships in the year 2014. For most disciplines, a 10-bank range is required. Bids must be submitted to NRA by August 1, 2013. Any bids received after this date will be considered only if NRA has still not made a decision. As a general policy, NRA rotates matches into different regions of the country every year, but has felt that Smallbore Rifle and High Power Rifle have the best response when fired in a back-to-back format. For BPCR competitors, rule 9.2.1 covers 'sighting in' prior to start of your first stage of 5 shots.
What this rule means is that the first stage: and the first stage only, of a 10 or 15 shot match will be the only time you may fire 'sighters' or fouling shots on a gong, or over the targets. Shots WILL BE scored as soon as you let the scorer know that you are finished taking 'sighters', and that you are ready to shoot for score. All Silhouette Rifle disciplines please review Rifle Rule 3.12. Please adhere to the clothing guidelines mandated for all NRA sanctioned monthly, regional, state, and National Matches.
Also, for all NRA sanctioned/registered matches, tournament sponsors/officials should weigh the rifles as well as checking the 2-pound requirement for Hunting Rifle triggers. Officials must also check for a fully operational safety in all hunting rifle categories. International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association (IHMSA) members that wish to compete in NRA events may use their IHMSA classification card to determine in which class they should compete. They are still required to purchase a Classification Score Record Book.
The Committee addressed a question about target stands in Cowboy Lever Action matches. The new rule will read as follows: '4.2 Target Setting (Cowboy Lever Action Only) - To ensure that full-size rams will be knocked down with reasonable loads, they should be set so that the center of gravity works through a plane intersecting the stands approximately 1 1/4' forward of the rear edge. This can be accomplished by experimentally moving the target to the rear until it topples, and then moving it forward 1'. Stands can be designed to incorporate stops to facilitate setting the targets at the proper topple point. Pistol Cartridge Cowboy Lever Action rifles and Smallbore Cowboy rifles are to be set full-foot and flush with the backs of their stands.'
The next item concerned all three Cowboy Rifle break points and will now read: Master 35-40 AAA 29-34 AA 22-28 A 15-21 B 0-14 The NRA has formed a 'Shooters With Disabilities Committee' to increase participation by persons with physical disabilities in the shooting sports. If you have disabled competitors that are shooting in your events, check to see if they have the necessary disability waiver, either for a six month temporary or a permanent waiver card. If they do not have one, they can call the Silhouette Department at 703-267-1474 and we will assist them in getting the credentials so they will be able to compete in all Silhouette events. Any further questions or comments can be directed to the NRA Silhouette Department by calling 703-267-1474. Good shooting and be safe.
Chicken, pig, turkey, and ram, scaled to appear as they would if placed at the correct distances from the shooter. Scale in, correct for NRA high power rifle using yards. Metallic silhouette shooting is a group of disciplines that involves shooting at representing at varying distances, seeking to knock the metal target over. Metallic silhouette shooting can be done with, firearms, modern, or modern.
A related genre is shot with bow and arrow, the metal targets being replaced with cardboard or foam. The targets used are, and, which are cut to different scales and set at certain distances from the shooter depending on the specific discipline. Contents. History Metallic silhouette is descended from an old sport, dating back to the early 1900s, where live game animals were staked out at varying distances as targets. By 1948, metal cutouts of the animals were used instead of live animals, and the first metallic silhouette match was held in Mexico City. Because of the sport's Mexican roots, in the the silhouettes are often referred to by terms from several, namely Gallina (chicken), Jabali (pig), Guajalote (turkey), and Borrego (ram). The first silhouette range constructed in the United states was in 1967 at Nogales, Arizona.
Growth was steady until 1973 when the NRA become involved in the sport. By the mid 1980's it was the fastest growing gun sport to ever hit the United states. Governing bodies The (IMSSU) is the international federation controlling Metallic Silhouette for both rifle and pistol competitions. There are also two major USA-based bodies; the covers all types of silhouette shooting in the, and the USA-based (IHMSA), founded in 1976. There are some minor differences between the international federations IMSSU rules and those of the NRA and IHMSA, but it is generally possible to compete in all with the same equipment. At this point, the NRA has stopped holding their national championship match for pistol silhouette.
Silhouette shooting is growing in popularity in Canada. The (S.R.A.C.) is the governing body for Rifle Metallic Silhouette Target Shooting in Canada. Sanctions the Canadian National Rifle Silhouette Championships hosted each year by one of the participating provincial silhouette associations. The Canadian Nationals adhere to NRA silhouette rules and regulations. Course of fire Targets are set up in groups of 5 of each kind, with a silhouette's width between targets, laid out at the required distances for the given match. Each group of targets must be shot left to right; if a target is missed then the next shot is taken at the next target. Any target hit out of order is considered a miss.
Targets are engaged in order of distance: chickens, pigs, turkeys, rams. The target must be knocked down or pushed off the target stand in order to score a hit; even a shot ricocheting off the ground in front of the target will count if it takes down the correct target.
Shooters are allowed to have a spotter with them, who watches where the shots land and advises the shooter on corrections to make. All disciplines require a minimum of 10 shots at each type of target, for a minimum of 40 shots per match; normal matches are 40, 60, 80, or 120 shots. To score a hit, the target must be knocked off its stand, so each used must provide sufficient to knock the heavy metal targets over. Scores are recorded as the number of hits per rounds fired, so 30 hits with 40 shots would be a score of 30x40. A tie can be broken in one of two ways: A sudden death shoot-off, used at all National and large regional competitions and for the overall match winner. Master class and AAA shooters would shoot at Turkeys, AA class shoot at Rams, A shoots at Chickens and B class shoots at Pigs. To save time and effort, a reverse animal count can also be used (number of hits on hardest animal to easiest), Whoever hits the most Turkeys would be the winner.
If a tie still exists whoever hit the most Rams would be the winner. This would continue to Chickens and finally Pigs. For IHMSA competition, tie scores are broken by either Reverse Animal Count, or by Shootoffs, as determined by the match director, however, for State, Regional and International Championships, shootoffs will be used to determine the winners in all categories and classes. For Reverse Animal Count, scores are compared starting at rams.the shooter with the most rams is the winner.
This procedure is used sequentially down through turkeys, pigs and chickens. If a tie still exists, a shootoff will be used to determine the winner. Shootoffs will be in banks of 5 targets and can be any type or size, placed at any distance out to the maximum ram distance for the competition. Shooting strings will continue until all ties are broken.
Sudden Death shootoffs are not allowed. Positions Rifle silhouette shooters generally shoot from an unsupported standing position, though black-powder rifles may use in some competitions. Handgunners may be required to shoot from an unsupported standing position (two hands may be used), or from a 'freestyle' position. Freestyle includes some unusual positions, such as the, which is shot lying on the back, legs bent and feet flat on the ground, with the pistol resting on the shooter's right leg.
In a freestyle position the pistol may only contact the shooter's body, no rests may be used (not even, in the case of the Creedmore position, the top of a boot). There are informal matches for special classes, like Cowboy rifles and pistols and vintage military surplus rifles. Target layouts. Cut cardboard targets of the same shape and sizes which are used for IHMSA in metallic silhouette shooting. All rifle shooting is done standing, with the firearm unsupported.
The exception to this is black-powder rifle; the ranges are the same as large-bore rifle, but only chickens must be shot unsupported; all other targets may be shot from any position, including, a bench may not be used. Pistol shooting, unless in a designated standing event, can be shot from any unsupported position. Inflow activation key serial. Like the any-position pistol shooters, standing pistol shooters adopt odd positions in their quest for the most stable possible shooting position. Standing pistol is the most difficult discipline; no one has shot a perfect 40x40.
Standing big-bore any-sight pistol matches are often tied with perfect scores, and decided by a tiebreaker. Silhouette sizes Chicken Pig Turkey Ram Width 13 in (33 cm) 22 in (56 cm) 19 in (48 cm) 32 in (81 cm) Height 11 in (28 cm) 14 in (36 cm) 23 in (58 cm) 27 in (69 cm) To allow shooting at ranges which may not have space for a full target layout, NRA rules allow the use of reduced scale pigs, turkeys and rams placed at the same distance as chickens.
The scale will be reduced proportional to the change in distance, so the targets will cover the same angular distance as they would if set up at full range. Reduced scale matches fired at paper targets are also popular for informal competitions, especially for based matches where the shooters may reside in different countries.
These are generally fired with. Targets for large bore use are 1/2' to 3/8' thick steel; small bore targets are 3/16' to 1/4' steel, and airgun targets are 1/8' steel, although some aluminum targets are produced.
